Time Management in Islam

Time Management is important in every person’s life. It is important to divide your time between work and other activities that you may be interested in. Time is precious for all of us, remember the time that you have wasted & might have felt you had utilized it correctly!

The real loser is indeed the one who has recognized this and yet they are falling back into the misery of procrastination. The real loser is the one who doesn’t do anything about his time, who has no purpose in this life & who takes his purpose of creation into play and amusement.

“Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said- There are two blessings that many people waste; good health and free time.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari

The real value of time can be derived directly from the Words of Allah. Whenever Allah wants to focus on certain things or wants to show its greatness, He takes an oath by it in the Glorious Qur’an; And Allah (SWT) swears by time in Surah Al-Asr.

103:1. By Time,

103:2. verily man is in a state of utter loss,

103:3. except those who believe and do righteous deeds, and exhort one another to hold fast to the truth and exhort one another to be steadfast.

Al-Quran; Ch.103

In today’s day and age, there are so many distractions for us that start right from our cell phones. We cannot focus on the important things, or we waste half of our time just scrolling over social networking websites. Anyone who manages their time in the best way possible is surely on the road to success. Also, it is not only about being productive and keeping yourself busy but rather it is about taking time out for your family and helping the less fortunate.

It is important for every Muslim that his time revolves around the commandments of Allah (SWT). It is giving your religion priority first over anything else. Once you do so, everything else will fall into place.

Who can best teach us on building time management skills than the best and perfect man ever to walk upon this earth; the role model for billions of Muslims out there; Muhammad (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him)

Our Prophet’s time was divided into 3 things-

  • Allah Alone i.e. following all his commandments and Ibadaat; “when it was asked to Aisha (R.A), How did Prophet Muhammad (SAW) spend his time? She said: He used to help us with the work we used to do, and when the time of prayer came; he went to the Masjid”
  • His family; Prophet Muhammad SAW was the best husband who used to contribute all the things with his family doing every possible thing.
  • helping & supporting the community.

It is also a big challenge for Muslims to get away with their desires since the fitnah these days is at everyone’s home (in the form of easy access to the internet) As we are living in the end times, we know that passing away of the time is one of the signs of the final hour.

“The Prophet (SAW) said: “The hour shall not be established until the time is constricted, and the year is like a month, a month is like a week, and the week is like the day, and the day is like the hour, and the hour is like the flare of the fire.””

(Jami`at-Tirmidhi)

Therefore, Muslims should be conscious of how they spend their time. They should not indulge in things that waste their time & energy.

Even the reaction of those who were negligent in this world will say at the time of their death- “My Lord, send me back, so that I may do the righteous deeds that I have failed to do. (Surah Al-Muminoon 99-100)” Because they will realize the abhorrent nature of his deeds, he will be filled with regret, so he asks to go back to this world, not to enjoy its physical joys and indulge in its pleasure but rather do deeds of righteousness & being dutiful to Allah.

Brothers and Sisters, Time is very precious, utilize it wisely. Once it is gone, it will never come back!!

“The Prophet SAW said- If you are awake in the morning do not expect to remain awake in the evening, and vice versa.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari

Let us reflect on this statement to strive for what matters i.e. the next life!
